Maison Lecompte, a Calvados producer based in Normandy, recently released Lecompte Secret, a limited-edition Calvados, bottled in a crystal decanter, a blend sure to seduce rare cognac and whisky collectors.
In the year 1923, Normandy wine and spirits merchant Alexandre Lecompte decided to sell his company, but he retained some old Calvados barrels stored at his country house. He then became a Calvados producer and opened Maison Lecompte, which still produces Calvados from the Pays d'Auge region today.
Alexandre Lecompte’s precious barrels have been carefuly stored during 85 years by the three successive cellar masters of Maison Lecompte. In 2005, the owners asked the current cellar master, Richard Prével, to create a new exceptional Calvados cuvée. He worked for five years to create the best blend possible out of spirits of various ages, including those coming from the century-old barrels.
The amber liquid has hints of citrus, dried fruits, with notes of chocolate and caramel. In the mouth, the taste of crystallized fruit is overwhelming, underlined by coffee, liquorice, Morello cherry, chocolate, orange. The texture is very smooth, and the taste has a long and bright finish.
This spirit comes in a hand-blown crystal decanter with a neck dressed with silver. The box is of lacquered wood and padded with leather. Lecompte Secret is bottled on demand by Maison Lecompte, €2,500 ($3,400).
